If you ever feeling the blues and need a quick energy boost, I encourage you to try the Judge Bites (Loqmet-El-Qadi). Loqmet El-Qadi is a popular Egyptian light treat that’s similar to mini-donuts, but topped with sugar syrup. The mini bites are usually spherical in shape with an endearing crunchy texture. Sometimes, I served it with Caramel or Nutella.
Loqmet -Elqadi (The Judge Bites) was known for the first time in Alexandria as the Egyptians inherited the recipe from the Greeks. It became widely popular later on. Loqmet-El-Qadi which translates to (the Judge Bites ) is known as so because it relates to the story behind naming this dish. We were told that; back in times, there was a famous judge who was monitoring the building of his palace and as he was tracking the project progress, he noticed the low workers’ performances due to their exhaustion. The judge thought about this light snack to be handed to his workers to boost their energy and morale, so eventually, the workers would feel rewarded and they would be encouraged to execute better. The idea turned out great as the workers loved the snack and they appreciated the “sweet” gesture! 🙂
I’ve been to Alexandria in Egypt a few times, and I had the best Loqmet -El-Qadi I’ve ever tasted. This light dessert has different names, they call it Zalabia as well. It was fascinating to learn later on that people from Desi cultures serve it as well but they would add extra spices to it, and they call Bunjabi.
It’s fantastic to see how we all eat almost the same thing, but we call it different names. Different people from different cultures get so creative in how to serve the same dish differently. We are so much different as much as we are so much alike.
