I feel so embarrassed when I remember this story as I was chaperoning at one of my teens’ school field trip-he was in kindergarten back then…

We were at a butterfly house and I was perplexed by how large were these butterflies to the point that I was scared to get close.

One of the ladies laughed so hard when she saw me freezing as I was scared to move when I saw a butterfly landing on my shoulder. I wasn’t sure if I should shew it or what!

The lady said, “You’re afraid of a butterfly?!”

Me, “….”

“You don’t have to worry or be afraid. It won’t hurt you. And just to let you know that butterflies are smart enough not to land on a thing/ a person that it feels like it can hurt them. Butterflies only land on safe spaces. This butterfly probably knew that you’re a person with a good heart, so it landed safely.”

I’m not sure about the scientific fact about what this lady said, but until now, I can’t believe that something as delicate as a butterfly made me scared at some point!

See, how huge was this butterfly! I caught it on someone’s shirt!

But after traumatizing events and sadness, fear is very common and very normal trauma response.

Let’s take a moment and reflect on the story of Moses when he was mistakenly involved in an incident that made him flee his home and hide for a quite some time fearing his enemies.

When God called on him and asked him to throw his staff and it turned into a gigantic snake, Allah affirmed him and said, “Take hold of it, and have no fear: We shall return it to its former state.” Quran (20:8)

And this is a very profound divine approach to deal with negative feelings we might have experienced like fear and grief.

First, validate these feelings, let it process, humanize your experience, then adjust, stop it by being more realistic. Just remember that God will turn things back to their original forms. It’s temporary. No stress no fear will last forever. Fear nothing. In these difficult times where anxiety is crippling to our lives and creeping into our minds, Fear Nothing is the best kind of advice you can offer to yourself, your kids and all your loved ones as well.
